Gaines County was founded in 1876 and was created by taking area from Bexar County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Gaines had a population of 21,540 people. This is an increase of 22.9% since the last Census (which gave a population of 17,526 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Gaines represented 0.07% of the total population of Texas.
