Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Townsend had an population of 461 people. This is an increase of 2.9% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 88.93% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Townsend had a population of 448 people. This makes Townsend the county's 6th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 448 people, the population of Townsend increased 83.61% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 244 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Townsend was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<6>

From that list, the Townsend post office opened in 1902.
