Greene County was founded in 1783 and was created by taking area from Washington County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Greene had a population of 69,069 people. This is an increase of 0.34% since the last Census (which gave a population of 68,834 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Greene represented 1.08% of the total population of Tennessee.
