Cocke County was founded in 1797 and was created by taking area from JeffersonCounty.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Cocke had a population of 36,047 people. This is an increase of 7.39% since the last Census (which gave a population of 33,565 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Cocke represented 0.59% of the total population of Tennessee, making it the state's 42nd most populous county (out of 95 counties).
