Welcome to Capuchin ...
So far, we found very little information about Capuchin. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>
We've added Capuchin to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. We would especially like to find the location of Capuchin - knowing its coordinates, we can explore things like its relationship to neighboring communities, nearby cemeteries, etc. If you can help us with Capuchin, please Contact Us.
While we don't have the exact location of Capuchin , we believe that it would have been located within present day Scott County<2>.
While we don't have a date for the founding of Capuchin, you might consider that their post office opened in 1892.
Time Zone: The area where Capuchin was located is in the Eastern Time Zone (EST/EDT) and observes daylight saving time
The Area Codes where Capuchin was located: 423 & 729<3>
Adding Capuchin to Our Gazetteer ...
The earliest source we've referenced which mentioned Capuchin was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<4>
From that list, the Capuchin post office opened in 1892. The Capuchin post office closed in 1914.

Footnotes ...
| <1> | We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Capuchin, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy. |
| <2> | If you're interested in how the shape of Tennessee's counties, including Scott, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries. |
| <3> | When there's a risk of an area code running out of phone numbers, an 'Overlay Area Code' is created that has the same geographic boundaries as the existing area code. In this case, the 423 code has been Overlayed with the 729 area code. New phone numbers in the Capuchin area will be assigned with one of these codes: 423 or 729. As a result, placing a call in the Capuchin area will require 10-digit dialing (where you enter both the area code and then the phone number). |
