Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Vermillion had an population of 10,933 people. This is an increase of 3.42% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 11.96% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Vermillion had a population of 10,571 people (or 76.25% of the total population of Clay County). This makes Vermillion the county's most populous community.

The population of Vermillion represents 1.3% of the total population of South Dakota (which has 814,180 people), making it the state's 12th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 10,571 people, the population of Vermillion increased 8.25% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 9,765 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Vermillion was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Vermillion post office opened in 1865.
