Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Pukwana had an population of 300 people. This is an increase of 5.26% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 4.53% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Pukwana had a population of 285 people (or 5.42% of the total population of Brule County). This makes Pukwana the county's 3rd most populous community.

The population of Pukwana represents 0.04% of the total population of South Dakota (which has 814,180 people), making it the state's 211st most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 285 people, the population of Pukwana has remained roughly the same as the 2000 Census (with a count of 287 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Pukwana was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Pukwana post office opened in 1883.

We also found Pukwana in the book titled Business Atlas and Shippers' Guide (1895).
