Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Gary had an population of 228 people. This is an increase of 0.44% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 1.3% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Gary had a population of 227 people (which is 5.22% of the total population of Deuel County). This makes Gary the county's 2nd most populous community.

The population of Gary represents 0.03% of the population of South Dakota (which has 814,180 people), making it the state's 232nd most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 227 people, the population of Gary decreased 1.73% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 231 people).

We originally found mention of Gary in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Gary was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Gary post office opened in 1874.

We also found Gary in the book titled Business Atlas and Shippers' Guide (1895).
