The community of Belle Fourche is the Seat for Butte County.
Butte County was founded in 1883 and was created by taking area from Harding County.
From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Butte had a population of 10,418 people. This is an increase of 3.05% since the last Census (which gave a population of 10,110 people in 2010).
At the time of the 2010 Census, Butte represented 1.24% of the total population of South Dakota.
