Kershaw County was founded in 1798. Kershaw was created by taking area from , Fairfield, Lancaster and Richland Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Kershaw had a population of 66,748 people. This is an increase of 8.19% since the last Census (which gave a population of 61,697 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Kershaw represented 1.33% of the total population of South Carolina.
