Erie County was founded March 12, 1800 and was created by taking area from Allegheny County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Erie had a population of 269,529 people. This is a decrease of 3.93% since the last Census (which gave a population of 280,566 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Erie represented 2.21% of the total population of Pennsylvania.
