The Commemorative Quarter for Ohio

Welcome to Shinn ...

So far, we found very little information about Shinn. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Shinn to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. We would especially like to find the location of Shinn - knowing its coordinates, we can explore things like its relationship to neighboring communities, nearby cemeteries, etc. If you can help us with Shinn, please Contact Us.

While we don't have the exact location of Shinn , we believe that it would have been located within present day Morgan County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Shinn, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1895.

Time Zone: The area where Shinn was located is in the Eastern Time Zone (EST/EDT) and observes daylight saving time

If Shinn still existed, it would have been in the (740) area code.

Communities Also Named Shinn ...

Using our Gazetteer, we found that there are 3 communities that are also named Shinn - they are located in California, Illinois and Kansas.

For more information, see our Tidbits & Trivia Page for Shinn.

Adding Shinn to Our Gazetteer ...

We originally found mention of Shinn in the GNIS. For more information, see the Referenced GNIS Codes section on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Shinn was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<3>

From that list, the Shinn post office opened in 1895.

We also found Shinn on a map titled George#&160;F. Cram Map (1901).

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Shinn, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of Ohio's counties, including Morgan, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
