The Commemorative Quarter for Ohio

Welcome to Riverdale ...

So far, we found very little information about Riverdale. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Riverdale to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. We would especially like to find the location of Riverdale - knowing its coordinates, we can explore things like its relationship to neighboring communities, nearby cemeteries, etc. If you can help us with Riverdale, please Contact Us.

While we don't have the exact location of Riverdale , we believe that it would have been located within present day Hamilton County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Riverdale, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1867.

Time Zone: The area where Riverdale was located is in the Eastern Time Zone (EST/EDT) and observes daylight saving time

Riverdale would have been located in the (513) area code.

Communities Also Named Riverdale ...

While we believe that this Riverdale is located in Hamilton County, we know of another 4 Ohio communities named Riverdale. Those communities are located in the following counties: Montgomery, Pike, Washington and Wood County.

Beyond Ohio, there are 71 communities that are also named Riverdale - they are located in Alabama (2), Arkansas, California (2), Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida (3), Georgia (2), Idaho (3), Illinois (4), Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Manitoba, Maryland (2), Massachusetts (4), Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York (2), Newfoundland and Labrador (2), North Carolina (2), North Dakota (2), Nova Scotia, Ontario (3), Oregon (2), Prince Edward Island, South Carolina (5), Tennessee (2), Texas, Utah, Virginia (6) and Wyoming.

Adding Riverdale to Our Gazetteer ...

We originally found mention of Riverdale in the GNIS. For more information, see the Referenced GNIS Codes section on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Riverdale was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<3>

From that list, the Riverdale post office opened in 1867.

We also found Riverdale in the book titled List of Post Offices in the United States (1870).

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Riverdale, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of Ohio's counties, including Hamilton, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
