Mercer County was founded April 1, 1820 and was created by taking area from Darke County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Mercer had a population of 41,255 people. This is an increase of 1.08% since the last Census (which gave a population of 40,814 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Mercer represented 0.35% of the total population of Ohio.
