Erie County was founded March 15, 1838. Erie was created by taking area from Huron and Sandusky Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Erie had a population of 74,179 people. This is a decrease of 3.76% since the last Census (which gave a population of 77,079 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Erie represented 0.67% of the total population of Ohio.
