The location of Cherokee has been provided by the Geographic Names Information System (ie- the GNIS).<3> While we don't have a date for the founding of Cherokee, you might consider that their post office opened in 1832. When the people of Cherokee referred to themselves (known as a demonym), they are believed to have used Cherokeean<4> While the community is gone, the present day location for Cherokee is 1,140 feet [347 m] above sea level.<5>. Time Zone: The area where Cherokee was located is in the Eastern Time Zone (EST/EDT) and observes daylight saving time Cherokee would have been located in the (937) area code.
