Welcome to Cherokee ...

So far, we found very little information about Cherokee. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

Cherokee would have been located within present day Logan County<2>.


The location of Cherokee has been provided by the Geographic Names Information System (ie- the GNIS).<3>


While we don't have a date for the founding of Cherokee, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1832.

When the people of Cherokee referred to themselves (known as a demonym), they are believed to have used Cherokeean<4>

While the community is gone, the present day location for Cherokee is 1,140 feet [347 m] above sea level.<5>.

Time Zone: The area where Cherokee was located is in the Eastern Time Zone (EST/EDT) and observes daylight saving time

Cherokee would have been located in the (937) area code.

Adding Cherokee to Our Gazetteer ...

We originally found mention of Cherokee in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Cherokee was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Cherokee post office opened in 1832.

We also found Cherokee in the book titled U.S. Post Offices (Oct. 1846).

However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now.
