Rio Arriba County is one of the original counties of New Mexico and was founded in 1852.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Rio Arriba had a population of 38,921 people. This is a decrease of 3.39% since the last Census (which gave a population of 40,286 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Rio Arriba represented 1.96% of the total population of New Mexico.
