The community of Toms River is the Seat for Ocean County.

Ocean County was founded in 1850 and was created by taking area from MonmouthCounty.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Ocean had a population of 573,678 people. This is an increase of 12.28% since the last Census (which gave a population of 510,916 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Ocean represented 6.07% of the total population of New Jersey, making it the state's 7th most populous county (out of 21 counties).
