Welcome to Hiawatha ...

So far, we found very little information about Hiawatha. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Hiawatha to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. We would especially like to find the location of Hiawatha - knowing its coordinates, we can explore things like its relationship to neighboring communities, nearby cemeteries, etc. If you can help us with Hiawatha, please Contact Us.

While we don't have the exact location of Hiawatha , we believe that it would have been located within present day Dundy County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Hiawatha, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1889.

Time Zone: The area where Hiawatha was located is in the Mountain Time Zone (MST/MDT) and observes daylight saving time

Hiawatha would have been located in the (308) area code.

Communities Also Named Hiawatha ...

Using our Gazetteer, we found that there are two Nebraska communities named Hiawatha: This one is located in Dundy County and the other is located in Washington County.

Beyond Nebraska, there are 12 communities that are also named Hiawatha - they are located in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan (2), New York, Oklahoma, Ontario, Pennsylvania, Utah and West Virginia.

Adding Hiawatha to Our Gazetteer ...

We originally found mention of Hiawatha in the GNIS. For more information, see the Referenced GNIS Codes section on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Hiawatha was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<3>

From that list, the Hiawatha post office opened in 1889.

We also found Hiawatha on a map titled Rand McNally Map of Nebraska (1895).

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Hiawatha, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of Nebraska's counties, including Dundy, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
