Welcome to Emporia ...

So far, we found very little information about Emporia. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Emporia to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. If you can help us with Emporia, please Contact Us.

Emporia would have been located within present day Holt County<2>.

Adding Emporia to Our Gazetteer ...

The earliest source (so far) we've referenced which mentioned Emporia was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<5>

From that list, the Emporia post office opened in 1890. The Emporia post office closed in 1902.

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Emporia, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of Nebraska's counties, including Holt, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
<3>When there's a risk of an area code running out of phone numbers, an 'Overlay Area Code' is created that has the same geographic boundaries as the existing area code. In this case, the 402 code has been Overlayed with the 531 area code. New phone numbers in the Emporia area will be assigned with one of these codes: 402 or 531. As a result, placing a call in the Emporia area will require 10-digit dialing (where you enter both the area code and then the phone number).
