Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Hickory had an population of 41,258 people. This is an increase of 3.12% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 10.84% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Hickory had a population of 40,010 people (or 25.92% of the total population of Catawba County). This makes Hickory the county's most populous community.

The population of Hickory represents 0.42% of the population of North Carolina (which has 9,535,483 people), making it the state's 21st most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 40,010 people, the population of Hickory increased 7.49% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 37,222 people).
