Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Elizabeth City had an population of 17,872 people. This is a decrease of 4.34% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 3.98% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Elizabeth City had a population of 18,683 people (which is 45.95% of the total population of Pasquotank County). This makes Elizabeth City the county's most populous community.

The population of Elizabeth City represents 0.2% of the total population of North Carolina (which has 9,535,483 people), making it the state's 47th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 18,683 people, the population of Elizabeth City increased 8.7% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 17,188 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Elizabeth City was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Elizabeth City post office opened in 1797.
