Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Elizabeth City had an population of 17,751 people. This is a decrease of 4.99% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 3.28% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Elizabeth City had a population of 18,683 people (or 45.95% of the total population of Pasquotank County). This makes Elizabeth City the county's most populous community.

The population of Elizabeth City represents 0.2% of the total population of North Carolina (which has 9,535,483 people), making it the state's 47th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 18,683 people, the population of Elizabeth City increased 8.7% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 17,188 people).
