Yancey County was founded in 1833. Yancey was created by taking area from Buncombe and Burke Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Yancey had a population of 18,059 people. This is an increase of 1.35% since the last Census (which gave a population of 17,818 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Yancey represented 0.19% of the total population of North Carolina.
