Watauga County was founded in 1849. Watauga was created by taking area from Ashe, Caldwell, Wilkes and Yancey Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Watauga had a population of 56,177 people. This is an increase of 10.21% since the last Census (which gave a population of 50,972 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Watauga represented 0.53% of the total population of North Carolina.
