At the time of the 2010 Census, Boone had a population of 17,122 people (which is 33.52% of the total population of Watauga County). This makes Boone the county's most populous community.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Boone was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<6>

From that list, the Boone post office opened in 1850.
