Johnston County was founded in 1746 and was created by taking area from Craven County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Johnston had a population of 209,786 people. This is an increase of 24.22% since the last Census (which gave a population of 168,878 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Johnston represented 1.77% of the total population of North Carolina.
