Clay County was founded in 1861 and was created by taking area from Cherokee County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Clay had a population of 11,277 people. This is an increase of 6.52% since the last Census (which gave a population of 10,587 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Clay represented 0.11% of the total population of North Carolina.
