The community of Asheville is the Seat for Buncombe County.

Buncombe County was founded in 1791. Buncombe was created by taking area from Burke and Rutherford Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Buncombe had a population of 262,049 people. This is an increase of 9.96% since the last Census (which gave a population of 238,318 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Buncombe represented 2.5% of the total population of North Carolina.
