Pondera County was founded in 1919. Pondera was created by taking area from Chouteau and Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Pondera had a population of 5,814 people. This is a decrease of 9.5% since the last Census (which gave a population of 6,424 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Pondera represented 0.71% of the total population of Montana, making it the state's 32nd most populous county (out of 56 counties).
