The community of Winnett is the Seat for Petroleum County.

Petroleum County was founded in 1926 and was created by taking area from Fergus County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Petroleum had a population of 497 people. This is an increase of 0.61% since the last Census (which gave a population of 494 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Petroleum represented 0.05% of the total population of Montana.
