Tate County was founded in 1873. Tate was created by taking area from DeSoto and Marshall Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Tate had a population of 28,321 people. This is a decrease of 2.3% since the last Census (which gave a population of 28,987 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Tate represented 0.98% of the total population of Mississippi.
