Perry County was founded in 1820 and was created by taking area from Greene County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Perry had a population of 11,998 people. This is a decrease of 2.06% since the last Census (which gave a population of 12,250 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Perry represented 0.41% of the total population of Mississippi.
