Pearl River County was founded in 1890. Pearl River was created by taking area from Hancock and Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Pearl River had a population of 57,860 people. This is an increase of 19% since the last Census (which gave a population of 48,621 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Pearl River represented 1.71% of the total population of Mississippi, making it the state's 14th most populous county (out of 82 counties).
