The community of Caruthersville is the Seat for Pemiscot County.

Pemiscot County was founded in 1851 and was created by taking area from New Madrid County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Pemiscot had a population of 15,864 people. This is a decrease of 13.29% since the last Census (which gave a population of 18,296 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Pemiscot represented 0.31% of the total population of Missouri.

While it makes interesting reading all by itself, it should be of special interest to genealogists and family historians looking for people who were either affected by or directly involved in such tragedies.
