The community of Mahnomen is the Seat for Mahnomen County.

Mahnomen County was founded in 1906 and was created by taking area from Norman County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Mahnomen had a population of 5,540 people. This is an increase of 2.35% since the last Census (which gave a population of 5,413 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Mahnomen represented 0.1% of the total population of Minnesota.
