At the time of the 2010 Census, Hagerstown had a population of 39,662 people (or 26.85% of the total population of Washington County). This makes Hagerstown the county's most populous community.

The population of Hagerstown represents 0.69% of the population of Maryland (which has 5,773,552 people), making it the state's 6th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 39,662 people, the population of Hagerstown increased 8.11% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 36,687 people).

We originally found mention of Hagerstown in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Hagerstown was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<9>

From that list, the Hagerstown post office opened in 1792.

We also found Hagerstown in the book titled U.S. Post Offices (Oct. 1846).
