Rowan County was founded in 1856. Rowan was created by taking area from Fleming and Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Rowan had a population of 22,872 people. This is an increase of 3.52% since the last Census (which gave a population of 22,094 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Rowan represented 0.55% of the total population of Kentucky, making it the state's 52nd most populous county (out of 120 counties).
