The community of Tompkinsville is the Seat for Monroe County.

Monroe County was founded in 1820. Monroe was created by taking area from Barren and Cumberland Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Monroe had a population of 10,654 people. This is a decrease of 2.82% since the last Census (which gave a population of 10,963 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Monroe represented 0.25% of the total population of Kentucky.
