Boyd County was founded in 1860. Boyd was created by taking area from Greenup, Carter and Lawrence Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Boyd had a population of 46,718 people. This is a decrease of 5.81% since the last Census (which gave a population of 49,602 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Boyd represented 1.14% of the total population of Kentucky.
