Stevens County was founded August 3, 1886 and was created by taking area from SewardCounty.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Stevens had a population of 5,129 people. This is a decrease of 6.11% since the last Census (which gave a population of 5,463 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Stevens represented 0.2% of the total population of Kansas, making it the state's 69th most populous county (out of 105 counties).
