Owen County was founded December 21, 1818. Owen was created by taking area from Davies's and Sullivan Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Owen had a population of 20,799 people. This is a decrease of 3.56% since the last Census (which gave a population of 21,566 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Owen represented 0.33% of the total population of Indiana.
