The community of Shoals is the Seat for Martin County.

Martin County was founded January 17, 1820. Martin was created by taking area from Davies's and Dubois Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Martin had a population of 10,179 people. This is a decrease of 1.5% since the last Census (which gave a population of 10,334 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Martin represented 0.16% of the total population of Indiana.
