Clay County was founded February 12, 1825. Clay was created by taking area from Owen, Putnam, Sullivan and Vigo Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Clay had a population of 26,301 people. This is a decrease of 2.19% since the last Census (which gave a population of 26,890 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Clay represented 0.41% of the total population of Indiana.
