At the time of the 2010 Census, Vandalia had a population of 7,042 people (which is 31.81% of the total population of Fayette County). This makes Vandalia the county's most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 7,042 people, the population of Vandalia has remained roughly the same as the 2000 Census (with a count of 6,975 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Vandalia was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<8>

From that list, the Vandalia post office opened in 1820.

We also found Vandalia in the book titled U.S. Post Offices (Oct. 1846).
