At the time of the 2010 Census, Springfield had a population of 116,250 people (or 58.87% of the total population of Sangamon County). This makes Springfield the county's most populous community.

The population of Springfield represents 0.91% of the total population of Illinois (which has 12,830,632 people), making it the state's 6th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 116,250 people, the population of Springfield increased 4.3% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 111,454 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Springfield was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<9>

From that list, the Springfield post office opened in 1828.
