Adding Highland Prairie to Our Gazetteer ...

We originally found mention of Highland Prairie in the GNIS. For more information, see the Referenced GNIS Codes section on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Highland Prairie was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<4>

From that list, the Highland Prairie post office opened in 1848.

We also found Highland Prairie in the book titled Table of U.S. Post Offices in the United States (Jan. 1851).

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Highland Prairie, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of Illinois' counties, including McHenry, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
<3>The pronunciation we've provided is our attempt to give a phonetic pronunciation for Highland Prairie. While it might not be exactly right, hopefully it will be close. If we have it wrong or there's a better way to pronounce the name, please contact us through our Feedback Page.
