The community of Mount Carmel is the Seat for Wabash County.

Wabash County was founded in 1824 and was created by taking area from Edwards County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Wabash had a population of 11,520 people. This is a decrease of 3.32% since the last Census (which gave a population of 11,916 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Wabash represented 0.09% of the total population of Illinois.
