Mercer County was founded in 1825 and was created by taking area from Schuyler County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Mercer had a population of 15,490 people. This is a decrease of 5.74% since the last Census (which gave a population of 16,434 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Mercer represented 0.13% of the total population of Illinois.
