The community of Aledo is the Seat for Mercer County.

Mercer County was founded in 1825 and was created by taking area from Schuyler County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Mercer had a population of 15,437 people. This is a decrease of 5.92% since the last Census (which gave a population of 16,409 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Mercer represented 0.13% of the total population of Illinois.
