Cass County was founded in 1837 and was created by taking area from Morgan County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Cass had a population of 12,147 people. This is a decrease of 10.9% since the last Census (which gave a population of 13,633 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Cass represented 0.11% of the total population of Illinois.
