The community of Emmett is the Seat for Gem County.

Gem County was founded in 1915. Gem was created by taking area from Boise and Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Gem had a population of 16,437 people. This is an increase of 8.27% since the last Census (which gave a population of 15,181 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Gem represented 1.17% of the total population of Idaho, making it the state's 20th most populous county (out of 44 counties).
